Classes for Youth:
Auto 101 Class - T.B.A. - This three hour workshop, sponsored by Surf City Garage, is for students ages 14–16 and their adult buddy and is designed for the student who is about to learn how to drive, is driving, or has a new license. This class covers discussions not taught in Drivers Education and includes an audio visual presentation and hands-on demonstrations that focus on the following topics: how cars are made, safety, basic maintenance inside and out; and simple checks and repairs as well as alternative fuel vehicles. The class is $25 per youth/adult pair for nonmembers and $20 per youth/adult pair for Museum members. This workshop meets auto-related patch/badge requirements for Boy Scouts (ages 14 and older). Youth Basic Engine Class - April 18, 2012 from 9:00am-12:30pm. Students 5th grade and above with their adult buddy will find out how engines work in this 3 hour hands-on class. Students get to take apart a Briggs and Stratton one cylinder engine and learn how solids, liquids, and gasses interact to make it run. Then fire up a variety of engines to see how each gets their specific job done. There is no driving or riding involved, and you won’t get greasy (although we do promise lots of noise and smoke). Driven to Learn Pre-Packaged Classes: See times and dates below for specific sessions. We are proud to present classes available to the public in a pre-packaged format that is normally reserved for those attending our world-class Docent Training. Pick and choose your sessions and learn the who, what, where and why while you develop a whole new passion for automotive evolution. Choose one session ($35 for nonmembers or $25 for Museum Members) or pick three sessions ($75 for nonmembers or $65 for Museum Members). CAM Photography Workshops - Together, the Museum and Sac Mav Rapid Media bring you these great classes every other month. See dates listed below and all classes are 5:00pm-9:00pm and each session is located at the Museum. With nearly 20 incredibly talented photographers who are eager to mentor and teach, and a floor of vintage and exquisite automobiles, you have a great recipe for informative, educational and fun photography workshops. There are two tracks based on skill level and new topics each session, students will go from basic to advanced throughout the year and find themselves growing and developing their photography skills right away - - especially with the one to one attention provided by instructors! Antique & Classic Car Mechanical Brake Workshop - May 5, 2012 from 9:00am-3:00pm. In this workshop you will learn about service and adjustment procedures for effective braking of the antique and classic car. This includes demonstrations on servicing and/or repairing brake linings, mechanical linkage service, and major adjustments. Handouts on real case histories of brake repair and adjustments will be provided. Students must be at least 18 years of age and are asked to bring in their antique or classic car for minor adjustments and repairs. Artomotive Photography Workshop - March 31 & April 7, 2012 from 9:00am-3:00pm. Cameras and cars seem to go together, don't they? If it’s aiding a sale, documenting restoration, or simply capturing the beautiful design of a vehicle; photography plays an important role to the automotive hobby. In this two day (consecutive Saturdays) workshop you will learn tips and techniques for enhancing your automotive photographs. This class is oriented toward digital photography through the use of Adobe Photoshop Elements. Please note that this course assumes that all adult students have an intermediate knowledge of photography and can bring their own camera equipment including tripods. The cost of this class is $99 per nonmember and $89 per Museum members and the cost includes both days and lunches. Model A Basics to Drive Class - May 12, 2012 from 9:00am–3:00pm. Have you ever wanted to know why the 1928-1931 Ford Model As are the most commonly owned, driven, and restored antique vehicles in America? Enroll in the class, presented by the Sacramento Capitol A's car club, and discover the wonder of Model A construction, nomenclature, operation and basic maintenance, along with some interesting automotive history. Each student will also have an opportunity to learn how to drive a Model A – an experience that won’t be forgotten! Have you ever wondered why the Ford Motor Company manufactured over fifteen million Model T’s from 1908 until 1927 and why it had such an impact on our nation’s society and economy? Model T Tune Up Workshop - April 28, 2012 from 9:00am-3:00pm. This one day workshop teaches students how to tune up Model T Fords. This will include the demonstration of tests and measurements of the starter/battery, engine condition (compression tests), ignition service (spark plugs, coil checks, and timing), and fuel system checks (tank, carburetor cleaning and adjustments). Handouts for Model T “how to” services will be provided. Students who have a Model T are encouraged to bring their car with them and checks will be performed on the vehicle. Students who do not own Model Ts will still have the opportunity to assist with tests and measurements. Muscle Car Tune Up Workshop - May 26 & June 2, 2012 from 9:00am–3:00pm. This workshop teaches hands-on tune up for 1960s and 1970s era muscle cars. This is a two day (consecutive Saturdays) workshop. Topics include technical service tips on the cranking systems, engine condition, ignition and advance, base timing, fuel system performance tests and service tips. Also included will be information on parts resources for your muscle car. Students are encouraged to bring their muscle car to both days of class so they can perform the tune-up tests and adjustments directly on their vehicle. The cost of this class is $99 per person for nonmembers and $89 per person for Museum members and includes both days and lunch. By Women for Women Automotive Class - June 9, 2012 from 9:00am-3:00pm. This class is taught by women at the top of their respective fields and is designed specifically for women who want to gain confidence and knowledge in the purchase of a car. Tips and techniques are also discussed to get the best service and value when taking a car to the mechanic. Lunch is included in this class, $85 for nonmembers and $75 for Museum Members.
