Docent ~ Volunteer Tour Guide

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition defines “docent” as: docent (do’s ant, do-sent'). A teacher or lecturer at some universities who is not a regular faculty member. A lecturer or tour guide in a museum or cathedral.

The California Auto Museum defines “docent” as: "The Heart and Soul of the Community."

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Docent at the California Automobile Museum!

Our docents, under the leadership of the Docent Council, are the educators for the Museum and the personal outreach to our visitors.  We conduct tours and help host special events for organized groups, school classes and individuals.  Some of us also give Speaker's Bureau talks, promoting the Museum throughout the region.  Most of all we enjoy contact with many interesting people from all over the world.

Our docent training is facilitated by over 45 subject-matter experts in presenting a 21-week training course. We will acquaint you with the Museum; the history of the automobile, the world automobile industry and its entrepreneurs; the cars in the Museum; the automobiles influence on our lives and times; and how to interestingly present these topics to visitors of all ages.  Please find the details in our course outline.

The twenty-seventh (2012) Docent Class is now accepting registrations for next year’s course. The Thursday evening classes will begin January 12, 2012, starting promptly at 6:00 PM and usually ending between 9:30 and 9:45 PM.  After graduation, we ask that you donate two four-hour docent shifts per month for at least two years.  (Most of us don't stop after two years too much fun!)

The fee for the course is only $99.00, which covers the cost of your training materials, your docent badge, a history DVD and a one-year membership in the California Vehicle Foundation, sponsor of the California Automobile Museum.  Scholarships are available under special circumstances.

We look forward to meeting you and introducing you to our Museum family.  If you have any questions please e-mail the instructor, Bill Millard, or call the Museum, (916) 442-6802, between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM daily.
