The California Automobile Museum seeks a creative and versatile Curator to acquire, care for, develop, display and interpret collections of vehicles and automobilia that informs, educates and entertains the public. Qualifications: academic degree in art, art history, or museum studies. Must effectively plan exhibits, prepare budgets, and build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. The Curator is involved in all aspects of visitor experience including design and construction of innovative and creative exhibits which appeal to a wide cross-section of the community, artistic input for appropriate marketing input and coordination of gift shop inventory with exhibition content.
Responsibilities include cataloging acquisitions and keeping records; researching, planning, organizing, interpreting and presenting exhibits; negotiating loan fees/funding; budgeting; dealing with artists, volunteers, and Board members; securing exhibit sponsorships; networking with museums, galleries and other lenders; collaborating in grant writing.
Qualifications:
- Curatorial experience preferred, including developing, designing and installing exhibits
- A college degree in curatorial studies or museum studies is preferred
- Knowledge of automobile history, culture, artifacts and related areas preferred
- Work experience in collection management, research, and restoration as well as computer and database management skills
- Administrative, budget development and management skills
- Leadership ability and strategic business and marketing skills
- Excellent organization, supervisory and communication skills

CURATOR Job Description
Organizational Purpose:
The mission of the Towe Auto Museum is to educate and entertain while preserving and promoting the automobile and its influence on our lives.
Position Purpose:
As Curator, your primary tasks will be to plan and oversee the arrangement, cataloguing, and exhibition of Museum collections, including but not limited to: vehicles, artifacts, library and display materials.
Major Responsibilities:
Acts as museum curator in coordination with Exhibits/Collections Committees
- Responsible for the care, protection and maintenance of the Museum's collections
- Accession and Deaccession
- Ensure that all contracts are in place, accurate and current
- Supervision during moves/changes
- Instructions and protection for autos and collections
- Cataloguing, record keeping, data management and location management of all collections
- Responsible for all displays and exhibits
- Idea and Planning process
- Research topics or items relevant to the collections and displays
- Maintain and develop collections
- Work with Education Committee to develop interpretive and interactive programs & exhibits
- Develop exhibit related materials, including research, planning, writing and editing exhibit labels, articles, visitor handouts, audio-visual scripts, exhibit-specific scripts and other interpretive materials.
- Assures the academic interpretation and historical integrity of Museum exhibits
- Responsible to ensure proper paperwork is maintained
- Coordinate educational and public outreach programs, such as tours, workshops, lectures, and classes
- Placards and signage
- Ensure proper signage is in place for all vehicles and displays
- Car Club Cavalcade
- Responsible for the monthly car club exhibits
- Rotating Exhibits
- Responsible for the quarterly and bi-annual special exhibits
- Report to Exhibits Committee
- Staff representative at regular monthly and special Exhibits Committee meetings
